Traded for My Sister's Future
Chapter 1
My family went to great lengths to make sure my husband Frazer and my younger sister Chelsea could be together.
When I was eight months pregnant, my parents—who had always favored Chelsea—invited me home for a meal.
There was a gas leak, and they pushed me aside and took Chelsea, who had leukemia, outside.
I was left in the fire. Frazer was the one who saved me.
He didn't even flinch when the fire scorched him.
Just when I thought I had finally found someone who truly loved me, I saw the chat history between him and Chelsea.
"Chelsea, hang in there. Once she gives birth and we get the cord blood, I'll be able to save you."
Turned out he had fallen for her instead.
Shattered, I made the hardest call of my life: schedule an abortion.
***
I had just picked up the abortion appointment slip when I ran into Frazer Hansen supporting my sister Chelsea Schneider on their way to a checkup.
Seeing me, he froze.
"Honey, why are you at the hospital? Today isn't your prenatal checkup, is it?"
Frazer looked nervously at my belly.
I used to think this was a sign of his love, but now I know he only saw me as a vessel of the cure for Chelsea.
"I wasn't feeling well, so I came to get it checked."
Frazer immediately grew more anxious.
"What's wrong? What did the doctor say? How's the baby? Do you have the results?"
Frazer quickly supported me and reached for my belly, eyes full of concern.
Chelsea, however, shot me a look of annoyance.
"You can't even keep a fetus safe. What good are you? If anything happens to that baby, you're so dead!"
I handed Frazer the ultrasound result I had just gotten.
"The checkup shows everything's fine. The baby's healthy."
Only then did Frazer breathe a sigh of relief.
"Thank goodness. You should go home and rest now. Chelsea still has a few more tests. I'll stay with her until it's all done."
Frazer's arm wrapped around Chelsea's waist the whole time.
I used to think he was overly nice to Chelsea because she was my sister. Never did I imagine they were secretly in love.
As they walked away, I tailed them, only to find they entered the office of the Director of Hematology—my dad.
"Chelsea can't wait any longer. We gotta find a way to help her."
Frazer held Chelsea's hand tightly.
"Just a little more time. Two months, max. Once Orla gives birth and we get the cord blood, we can save Chelsea."
My dad looked grave.
"Chelsea might not even make it through a month. We need the core blood now."
"Then do the C-section now. At eight months, the baby should be developed enough."
Just then, someone stepped out from the corner—my mom working at the OB-GYN department.
I felt like knives were stabbing into my chest, making me breathless.
So everyone had been in on it. How naïve I was to believe that my parents had finally started to love me after I got pregnant!
"But Orla's baby is only eight months along. Wouldn't forcing a C-section be harmful to the baby?"
Frazer suddenly asked, snapping me out of my thoughts.
My mother's face darkened, her brows furrowed.
"Chelsea's health is our priority right now. Nothing else matters."
Looking at the woman who gave me life, I felt my heart being shattered into a million pieces.
Chelsea just snuggled deeper into Frazer's chest.
Chapter 2
"Frazer, why do you care so much about her baby? Don't tell me you're in love with her!" said Chelsea.
Frazer quickly pulled her tightly into his arms.
"Of course not! I only married her for the cord blood to save you. Once she delivers the baby, she'll be worthless to me."
Tears streamed down my face as I watched this scene unfold before me. In my hand, I still clutched the abortion pill the doctor had just given me.
I tilted my head back and swallowed the pill without hesitation.
Afterward, I returned home. I signed the divorce papers and placed the document into the safe.
Just as I was about to pack my things, the door was suddenly flung open with force.
I was startled, a chill running down my spine.
Frazer strode in and grabbed my hand.
"Honey, the doctor read your report again. She said the baby isn't doing well and told me to take you to the hospital immediately."
I tried to pull my hand away, but Frazer gripped my wrist so hard that it had already turned red.
"I'm not going. The doctor told me earlier today the baby is healthy. Besides, why would the hospital contact you and not me?"
Frazer's eyes were bloodshot, looking anxious.
"The hospital contacted me last minute. It was your mother who personally told me. Even if you don't believe me, you should believe your mother, right?"
Just then, my parents walked in through the door. My mother's face was cold.
"It's your own fault. You were careless and didn't take care of the fetus. You're coming with us to the hospital right now."
My father chimed in, "Your mother is an OB-GYN. Don't you trust what she says?"
I grabbed the bedroom door handle with my other hand.
"I'm not going. It's already late. It can wait until tomorrow. Besides, I feel fine. There's nothing wrong with me."
My mother shot me a vicious glare and came forward, trying to pry my fingers off the handle.
"Just do what I say. Why are you talking so much nonsense? I'm your mother. Would I hurt you?"
My parents sent me to the countryside to live with my grandparents from the day I was born. It wasn't until my grandparents passed away that they reluctantly brought me back.
All these years, I had always wanted to ask them why they didn't love me.
I held on with all my strength, so my mother couldn't pry my fingers off.
Finally, my mother lost her patience.
She slapped my face hard.
"You better come to the hospital right now. If anything happens to Chelsea because of your delay, I won't forgive you."
My cheek swelled instantly, and I sneered.
"Finally not hiding anymore?"
My mother showed no shame.
"I don't know what you're talking about. All I know is that you're no longer in a condition to continue this pregnancy, and Chelsea happens to need cord blood to survive."
Seeing I still wouldn't let go, my father came over to help.
"Orla, you've always been a sensible girl. Now your sister needs you. Can't you help your mom and dad just this once?"
I spat right at my father's feet.
"You don't get to play the family card. Chelsea's life matters, but mine doesn't? Forcing an early C-section at eight months could be fatal."
Seeing I wouldn't budge, my father slapped me across the face too.
"You ungrateful thing! That's your sister. What's wrong with sacrificing one child to save your own sister? It's not like you won't be able to conceive again."
Frazer dropped the act too. He grabbed me by the throat.
"Orla, Chelsea fainted this afternoon. She's waiting for your cord blood to save her life. Whether you want to or not, you're going to the hospital today."
"Frazer, I'm carrying your child!" I yelled.
But Frazer sneered in contempt.
"It's an honor and duty for my child to save Chelsea. Otherwise, you'd never be worthy of carrying my child in the first place."
I looked into Frazer's cold eyes and felt my heart shattering apart.
Chapter 3
"Dad, Mom, don't waste time on her. Chelsea can't wait. Let's tie her up and take her to the hospital."
After saying that, Frazer fetched a rope and tied my hands up with my parents' help.
"Move it. I'll make you pay the price if Chelsea can't get treatment in time because of you."
My mom pushed me forward, but I pressed my foot against the door frame and refused to leave the house.
Frazer kicked me hard in my foot.
"Orla, I'll kill you if anything happens to Chelsea."
Frazer used almost all his strength, so I knelt despite myself.
The pain brought tears to my eyes, and then a sharp pain came from my abdomen too.
"Don't hurt the baby in her belly. You can hit her face instead."
Mom looked at Frazer with dissatisfaction.
Frazer nodded repeatedly and got me up easily with my dad's help. Then, they dragged me forward.
Right after the elevator door opened, a strong man came out.
I knew him. He was a policeman named Zackery Sawyer. He lived next door and had helped me catch a thief.
I thought he could be my lifesaver, so my eyes sparkled.
"Help..."
My mom covered my mouth tightly and interrupted, "Do you want to throw up? No worries. You'll be in the hospital soon."
Zackery looked at us in confusion.
"What are you doing?"
"My wife isn't feeling well. Maybe she's about to deliver. So I'm taking her to the hospital," Frazer answered calmly.
My hands were tied behind me. Frazer gripped them to keep them from moving.
So I could only look at Zackery with a pleading look.
"I'm an OB-GYN. My daughter is giving birth soon. We have to go to the hospital now."
Afraid that Zackery didn't believe her, Mom took out her work ID.
"Then go. You have no time to waste."
Zackery moved away to let us get through, which relieved Frazer.
Then, I was pressed into the elevator. Watching Zackery leave, I felt despair.
"Bitch, you wanted to tell on us to that policeman, didn't you? Do you know you could have killed your sister? How can you be so evil?"
After the elevator door closed, my mom pinched my arm.
It hurt so much that my tears kept running down.
Suddenly, my dad's phone rang.
"Dr. Schneider, your daughter Chelsea's fever keeps going up. You'd better come back now!"
After hanging up, Dad looked at my belly with a worried face.
"Chelsea can't wait anymore. Give her a C-section right after she gets to the hospital."
When the elevator door opened again, Frazer and Dad dragged me out immediately.
"Hold on."
Hurried footsteps sounded from behind me. I turned around and saw Zackery's serious face, my hope rekindled.
"You dropped your ID."
Zackery trotted over and handed my ID to my mom.
"Thank you," Mom said.
Meanwhile, I tried to struggle free.
"Sir..." I said when Zackery was about to leave again.
But Frazer clamped his hand over my mouth.
"Honey, just try to hang on a little longer. We'll be in the hospital soon."
Then, he pulled me to the car.
Right after they threw me in, my mom pinched my arm again.
"If you try to cause trouble again, I'll not let you off."
Frazer drove fast and ran 3 red lights in a row before we arrived at the hospital.
