Chapter 1
After a car accident, Yvonne Zeller lost her memories.
She could recall everyone except Colin.
Nancy Sullivan, her best friend who had been waiting at the hospital for days, quickly realized that Yvonne truly couldn't remember Colin. Her expression instantly shifted.
"Yvonne, it's just the two of us here," Nancy said. "Be honest—are you pretending to forget my brother just to make him notice you?"
Yvonne blinked in confusion. "No, I honestly don't remember anything. Who is he?"
"You're not lying? Then swear it!"
Facing suspicion, Yvonne didn't hesitate and made a serious vow right away.
Nancy was stunned by Yvonne's response, like she had been hit by lightning, and grabbed Yvonne's shoulders hard.
"You truly remember everything except Colin?"
Yvonne was confused why that was so shocking and asked, "Who's Colin?"
Nancy's expression turned complicated as she sighed and began explaining slowly, "Colin is my brother. When you visited my house, you fell for him right away and chased after him for seven years..."
Yvonne's brain stopped working for a second after hearing that.
"So, he's my boyfriend now?"
Nancy looked a little awkward. "No. He never returned your feelings. He already has someone he loves. He's cold to everyone, not just you. He still can't forget his first love, Sienna Jefferson.
"When they broke up, he was devastated. He drank constantly, ended up in the hospital, and almost didn't make it. He never moved on. The day of your accident, he went to pick up Sienna, who had just gotten back to America, and left you alone on the highway in the heavy rain. That was when the crash happened and you lost your memory."
Yvonne was so shocked she couldn't say anything. Her face froze with disbelief.
"If he never liked me, still loves someone else, and even hurts me for her, why did I ever like him? You're not lying to me, are you?"
"Why would I lie to you? Everyone knows how crazy you were about my brother."
Nancy shook her head, passed Yvonne the phone, and signaled for her to unlock it.
With hesitation, Yvonne took the phone and typed in a series of numbers, but the code didn't work.
"It's not your idol's birthday anymore—it's my brother's, 0715."
Following Nancy's words, Yvonne unlocked the phone.
The moment she opened the photo album, she was overwhelmed by countless photos of a man she didn't recognize.
His striking face made her freeze in place, and it slowly dawned on her that Nancy had been telling the truth.
Colin matched the image of her dream guy perfectly.
But in every photo, captured secretly from different spots, his eyes toward her were cold and distant.
Feeling unsettled, Yvonne tapped into the memo section.
She found page after page filled with notes about Colin—his favorite things, his habits, and what he couldn't stand.
She also discovered a diary where she had written about her one-sided feelings each day.
"This is the seventh Valentine's Day. I practiced how to confess for two weeks, but I still got turned down. Colin, you said there's no future for us, but I just can't move on.
"You got drunk again and thought I was her. You kept saying her name. You told me you couldn't forget her. Even though you knew she wouldn't come back, you still chose to wait, like chasing a flame you know will burn you. At that moment, I realized we were the same. Our love is just as hopeless and heartbreaking."
Even though her memories were gone, Yvonne could still feel the pain and sorrow behind those words.
It felt like something sharp pierced her chest, and the pain wouldn't stop.
Her nose tingled, and tears were close to spilling out.
She stood frozen, lost in emotion and unable to calm herself.
The ward stayed quiet until Nancy finally broke the silence.
"So, what now? Do you still want to continue with the treatment? My uncle is a great psychiatrist, but he's overseas now. If you..."
"Forget it," Yvonne said. "I don't remember much, but I can tell that liking your brother must have hurt a lot. Maybe forgetting was for the best."
She took a long breath, looked down, and erased everything—photos, memos, all of it.
Nancy stared at Yvonne with shock. Just as she was about to say something, her phone rang.
After hanging up, she grabbed her bag and said quickly, "I've got something to take care of at home. Take care, Yvonne. I'll visit when I'm free."
The door closed.
Yvonne was about to rest when she received a call from her hometown.
"Yvonne, do you remember I once told you about your arranged marriage? It's been put off for years. Have you thought about it yet?"
Amelia Zeller didn't expect a yes. She just wanted to give it one last shot.
To her surprise, Yvonne paused, then agreed.
"Alright, Mom. Once I handle things here, I'll go back and go through with it."
Amelia was stunned, her tone filled with disbelief.
"You... What did you just say? You used to be crazy about your best friend's brother. You even stayed in New York just for him and refused to return to San Francisco. You pursued him for many years. Why give up all of a sudden?"
Yvonne had no idea how to bring up her memory loss, and she didn't want her family to stress over the accident.
So, after a moment of thought, she kept it simple.
"I don't like him now, and I never will again."
Chapter 2
After the call, Yvonne roughly figured out when she'd be done with things here and booked a flight back to San Francisco in two weeks.
Once she got the ticket, the nurse came to tell her it was time for a follow-up check-up.
She sat in the wheelchair. But when she went outside and looked up, she saw someone familiar.
She had just seen him in the photo album.
It was Colin.
The moment he noticed her, the coldness in his expression grew even stronger.
"How did you know I was here? Did you follow me to the hospital?"
Yvonne hadn't expected her first meeting with Colin after losing her memory to be like that, especially with how disgusted he seemed with her.
She was stunned for a moment before responding, "You're mistaken. I didn't follow you. I was in a car accident on the highway. I'm recovering here."
Colin frowned and glanced at her. Before he could say anything, someone from the ward came out.
He stepped forward to greet her, saying, "Sienna, your fever just went down. Didn't I tell you to rest? Why are you out?"
Hearing the name, Yvonne turned instinctively and saw Sienna, dressed in a long white dress with waist-length hair.
Their eyes met, and Sienna gave a soft smile, looking surprised.
"It's stuffy in the ward, so I came out for some fresh air. Colin, who is this?"
Colin's gaze shifted slightly. "She's Yvonne Zeller, my sister's best friend and a designer in the company. I don't know her well."
Sienna smiled politely and said, "Nice to meet you, Ms. Zeller. I'm Sienna Jefferson. Your head is wrapped up—did you have an accident?"
Yvonne nodded. "Yes, I was in a car accident. I had a mild concussion and lost my..."
Before she could finish, a nurse's voice called from behind her.
"Patient 1124, Yvonne Zeller. It's time for your check-up."
Yvonne, no longer feeling like continuing the conversation, quickly said goodbye and wheeled herself off toward the examination.
Colin, on the other hand, watched her go with a frown. Her calm reaction was so different from before, so he couldn't help but watch her for a moment.
In the past, she would always pester him when they met. But now, she was leaving so decisively.
After finishing the check-ups, Yvonne went to the pharmacy to get her medicine.
Passing the garden downstairs, she noticed the weather was nice and decided to get some fresh air by taking a walk on her own.
Just as she reached the pool, she saw Sienna approaching.
"Ms. Zeller? Out for some fresh air as well? What a coincidence."
Yvonne was also surprised but greeted Sienna politely.
Sienna was outgoing and quickly offered to help Yvonne with her wheelchair, smiling.
"Colin just took a call and went to work. I'm a little bored alone. Why don't we chat? Since you're Nancy's friend and have worked with Colin for years, I've meant to ask you something. I heard there was a girl who chased after Colin for seven years. Do you know who she is? What's Colin's attitude toward her?"
Yvonne paused for a moment but quickly regained her composure, answering calmly.
"I'm not sure. But after being pursued for seven years, he only has you in his heart. That shows you mean the most to him. No one else matters."
Chapter 3
Hearing Yvonne speak so confidently, Sienna looked a little surprised, her voice turning shy.
"Do you know about Colin and me? Does he talk about me often?"
Yvonne remembered what Nancy had told her about how much Colin loved Sienna, so she nodded. "Yes."
Sienna's face flushed, and happiness shone in her eyes.
"Colin's a year older than me. He's a school idol, popular with everyone. He had many admirers, but he fell for me at first sight. He chased after me for a long time before I agreed to give him a chance. Once we were together, he spoiled me in every way. He'd walk me to class, study with me in the library, and even cover the campus with roses to celebrate our anniversaries. If anyone confessed to me, he'd get jealous for days.
"We've been together for four years. Everyone said I was the love of his life. He even told me so many times that he'd marry me after graduation, but I wasn't ready to settle down. I had my dreams, so I turned him down and broke up with him to study abroad. But over the years, I knew he never moved on. That's why I decided to come back.
"When I landed in New York, I was still unsure. But when I saw him rushing through the rain to get my luggage, I knew nothing had changed. I've been sick the past few days, and he's been taking care of me. I can tell he wants to get back together, but he hasn't said it. I thought maybe he was interested in another girl, so I wanted to ask you about it."
Yvonne listened quietly to Sienna's story, but her heart remained calm. She smiled.
"If he cares for you that much, he won't rush to get back together. Maybe he's planning a surprise."
Sienna relaxed at her words. She waved to say goodbye, but in doing so, she accidentally dropped her phone into the water.
She instinctively bent down to grab it, but she lost her balance and fell into the pool.
Yvonne was momentarily stunned, then quickly wheeled herself over to call for help.
But before she could, Colin appeared, running toward them. Without hesitation, he jumped into the water and pulled Sienna out.
She coughed up water and gradually regained her breath. His face relaxed from worry.
Yvonne watched all that unfold and was about to call a doctor, but Colin stopped her sharply.
"You pushed Sienna into the water on purpose! Instead of helping, you were just going to act like nothing happened and leave?"
Yvonne was caught off guard by his accusation. "She fell while trying to pick up her phone. I didn't push her, and I never intended to let her drown."
Colin shot her a cold look and interrupted her.
"Picking up a phone? I stepped away for a moment, and Sienna went to the pool and fell in. Who else could it be but you, pushing her in on purpose?"
He then shoved Yvonne and her wheelchair into the pool, his voice frosty.
"For Nancy's sake, I tolerated your constant pestering before, but Sienna is my bottom line. If you don't know how to back off, you'll have to face the consequences."
He signaled for his bodyguards to stand guard and prevent anyone from helping her.
The cold water poured into Yvonne's nose and mouth, choking her and making her uncomfortable.
She struggled alone, and the wound on her leg reopened. Blood spilled into the water, turning it red.
Her strength faded as she trembled from pain, sinking deeper into the water.
In her daze, the last thing she saw was Colin carrying Sienna away.
Yvonne didn't know how long she'd been unconscious, but when she woke up, she saw Nancy's worried face.
"I was only gone for a few hours. How did you fall in? The doctor said if you'd been even a minute later, you might not have made it. I was so scared."
Remembering what happened before she passed out, Yvonne fell silent.
She wanted to tell Nancy everything. But when she remembered that Colin was Nancy's brother, she hesitated.
She shook her head weakly, her voice tired. "I'm fine. Don't worry."
Chapter 4
Nancy's eyes reddened, but she didn't say anything. She stayed in the ward with Yvonne for the next few days.
During that time, she mentioned Colin a few times, almost like she was testing Yvonne's feelings.
"Yvonne, from what I know about my brother, you've confessed to him so many times. If it were anyone else, he'd have pushed them away, but he's tolerated you for so many years. That shows he still has feelings for you, though I don't think he realizes it himself. Are you sure you're not going to think about him anymore?"
If Yvonne had just woken up and heard those words, she might have believed them. But after falling into the water, she knew it was just wishful thinking.
She showed Nancy some photos that her colleagues had sent her over the past couple of days. They showed Colin and Sienna shopping, eating, and watching movies together. Her tone was calm as she spoke.
"He only put up with it for your sake. Since I lost my memories of him, it's clear we're not meant to be. Now that the person he's waiting for is back, it's time for me to move on from this relationship."
Seeing that Yvonne had truly made up her mind, Nancy didn't try to convince her anymore. She just sighed deeply.
"I truly hoped that my brother would come to his senses and be with you. Then you'd be my sister-in-law, and we'd always be together. But if you've decided to give up, I won't push you. I won't get involved with my brother's love life anymore. We'll always be good friends."
Yvonne nodded, giving Nancy a gentle hug.
They talked quietly for a little while longer. Later, Nancy helped Yvonne with the discharge procedures and took her to the car.
"You've been stuck in the hospital for so long. You must be feeling down. I'll organize a party to celebrate your discharge and invite some people."
Thinking it might be the last time she hung out with her friends, Yvonne didn't refuse and followed Nancy to the club.
But when they opened the door to the private room, they both froze.
Seeing Colin and Sienna sitting in the middle of the room, Nancy was shocked.
"Colin? Why are you here?"
A few friends who helped organize the party explained, "You said the more people, the better. I called Colin, and he brought Sienna along. It should be fun, right?"
Nancy stared at them in disbelief.
Yvonne understood Nancy's concern and quickly pulled her aside.
"It's fine. If they want to stay, let them. I don't remember anything from the past, so I won't be upset."
Nancy reluctantly agreed and led Yvonne to a seat.
Though the room was filled with noise that night, there was an underlying tension.
Colin took off his coat and draped it over Sienna, shielding her from the wine, peeling fruit, and feeding it to her as if no one else was present.
Every action was so affectionate and tender, with no attempt to hide his feelings.
Yvonne watched quietly, feeling a bit down but not truly hurt.
It seemed that forgetting those memories had turned out to be a blessing for her.
Thinking Yvonne might be sad, Nancy quickly gathered a group to play games and distract her.
Yvonne had a lucky streak, winning more than ten games in a row before losing one. Everyone immediately began calling for a punishment.
Not interested in the usual games, Yvonne suggested they play truth or dare instead.
The room went quiet as everyone's attention shifted to her and Colin, their excitement evident.
"Alright, tell us about the most unforgettable relationship of your life!"
Before Yvonne could answer, Colin's expression darkened.
He shot her a quick, cold glance.
Yvonne understood that he was warning her not to say anything inappropriate in front of Sienna.
But with no memories to hold her back, she simply offered a vague answer, saying just enough to satisfy the group.
"The most unforgettable relationship for me would be my first love. He was my best friend's brother, and I think I fell for him at first sight. I wrote him many love letters, and I even secretly took photos of him, filling up several albums. Everyone knew I was in love with him, but he never felt the same."
She said it with a casual smile, but the room fell silent.
Sienna, who had been quietly observing, seemed to sense something and pulled Colin, who looked upset.
"Colin, you and Ms. Zeller..."
Colin froze, tightening his grip on her hand, and quickly denied it.
"I have nothing to do with her. She's the one who's been holding on to a fantasy the entire time."
Chapter 5
Colin spoke with absolute certainty, leaving no space for doubt.
Without another word, he grabbed Sienna and walked away in front of everyone.
The people in the room looked at Yvonne with sympathy.
Nancy, who had been quiet until then, couldn't hold back any longer and rushed out.
Yvonne quickly realized what Nancy was about to do and chased after her, finding her arguing with Colin in the garage.
"Yvonne is my best friend! Why did you humiliate her in front of everyone? She's loved you for so many years. Can't you show some kindness for the sake of her sincerity?"
"I've put up with her for seven years. I rejected her politely over and over for your sake. Isn't that enough? Her love has only brought me trouble!"
Nancy was furious, almost losing control as she yelled at him.
"Don't worry! She'll never love you again! After you left her on the road last time, she got into that car accident and had a concussion—"
"I only took her home because of you. Why should I feel bad about abandoning her? Even if she had a car accident, even if time could go back a hundred times, I'd still choose Sienna over her! If she still resents me, she should just stay away!"
The sound of a car door slamming echoed in the distance. Yvonne didn't want them to know she had overheard, so she quickly turned and left to avoid more awkwardness.
Once home, she went through the entire house, sorting out everything related to Colin that she'd kept over the years.
Then, she threw it all away.
She spent the next two days packing up her things.
On Monday, Yvonne went to work and handed in her resignation letter to the HR department.
The staff was shocked when they heard she was resigning.
"Weren't you just in a car accident and on leave? I heard the director position in the design department is open, and Mr. Sullivan was planning to promote you. Why are you suddenly quitting?"
According to Nancy, Yvonne had joined the Sullivan Group's design department after graduation just to be closer to Colin.
For three years, she worked hard to be near him and have a chance to be by his side.
But now, she didn't remember him and had forgotten what it was like to like him.
So, when faced with the staff who hoped she wouldn't leave, she just smiled gently.
"I just want to go back to my hometown."
The HR staff didn't try to persuade her further and stamped her resignation form.
"Alright. Once I get Mr. Sullivan's signature, your resignation will be processed."
Chapter 6
On her way back from the HR office, Yvonne was stopped by a colleague.
"Mr. Sullivan just called a meeting for the design department. It looks like he's going to announce the new director. The meeting is about to start, so you should come with us."
Yvonne nodded and followed them to the office.
As they walked, several colleagues congratulated her with big smiles.
"Yvonne, you've been a part of so many key projects these past three years, and your work has won multiple international gold awards. It's only fair that the director position goes to you."
"Exactly! You've accomplished so much, and Mr. Sullivan thinks highly of you. We all believe you'll be the new director. When the good news comes, you have to treat us to dinner!"
Having worked with them for so long, Yvonne knew they were genuinely happy for her.
She had planned to tell them about her resignation, but since Colin hadn't signed the form yet, she decided to let them know during dinner.
"It doesn't matter whether I become the new director, but I do want to treat everyone to dinner tonight. I have some news to share."
The group chatted as they walked, and soon they arrived at the conference room. Yvonne picked a corner and sat down.
Once everyone was there, Colin entered on time, scanned the room, and got straight to the point.
"I'm sure you've all heard the rumors. Today's meeting is to announce the new design director. If anyone has something to say, now's your chance."
All eyes turned to Yvonne. She had hoped to stop the announcement before she resigned.
So, after a brief pause, she met Colin's calm gaze, took a deep breath, and stood up.
"Mr. Sullivan, over the years, I've been entrusted with many projects thanks to your trust. I've worked hard alongside my colleagues to complete them successfully. I'm not sure who the director you're considering is, but before you make the official announcement, I'd like to—"
Before she could finish saying 'withdraw as a candidate,' Colin cut her off.
"Out of the ten designers in the department, your work is the best, but your qualifications are lacking. So, I've decided to bring in a new director who has the experience and credentials needed for this important role."
His words stunned everyone in the room. Yvonne also stood there in a daze.
Colin's voice broke the silence.
"Let me introduce the new director of the design department, Sienna Jefferson."
The conference room door opened, and Sienna walked in with a smile.
"Hello, everyone, I'm Sienna, a doctoral student from Milan Design Academy. I've also won the European Youth Design Award..."
The room fell silent. Everyone exchanged looks, their expressions awkward.
That was because many of the designers present had won the awards Sienna had just mentioned.
She also had no professional experience and had been placed in the role right after graduating. It was hard for everyone to accept, especially the senior designers who had been there for nearly five years. One of them spoke up.
"Mr. Sullivan, we all feel that Ms. Jefferson lacks experience and needs at least another two years before she can be the director. Yvonne is more qualified for the position."
As the others nodded in agreement, Sienna's eyes filled with tears, and she looked at Colin with a hurt expression.
Seeing her tears, Colin's gaze softened briefly, but when he looked at Yvonne, his eyes turned sharp and cold.
"Sienna is a top graduate from a prestigious school with numerous international awards. In terms of vision and ability, Yvonne can't compare to her.
"Yvonne may have handled many projects, but her success was built on the strong foundation of the design department. Even if I give all of this to Sienna, she'll handle it perfectly or even better. Therefore, the position of design department director must go to Sienna. No further discussion."
Chapter 7
Even though Yvonne no longer had feelings for Colin, being embarrassed in front of everyone still hurt. Her face went pale from the humiliation.
Once Colin finished making the announcement, he ended the meeting and quickly left with Sienna.
An HR staff member who had been waiting nearby handed him Yvonne's resignation application.
"Mr. Sullivan, this is a resignation letter that needs your signature."
Without even glancing at it, Colin signed the document coldly and walked off with Sienna.
After they left, Yvonne's coworkers rushed over to comfort her. Surprisingly, she was calm.
Holding the signed resignation tightly, she smiled and said, "Being director isn't important to me. I had already planned to quit.
"Mr. Sullivan just approved it. Today is my last day here. There's still a long journey ahead of me. I wish you all well. We'll meet again someday."
Everyone was stunned when they found out Yvonne was leaving. They didn't want her to go.
Some even said they would talk to Colin and try to help her get her position back.
Yvonne just smiled, shook her head, and thanked them one by one. Then, she returned to her office and quietly started packing.
After work, she invited her coworkers out for a farewell dinner. The mood was a little sorrowful as she said her goodbyes.
When she got home, she called her agent and listed her apartment at the lowest possible price. It sold the very next day.
She handled the transfer procedures quickly and arranged to move out two days later.
Once everything was taken care of, she got a phone call from Nancy.
"Yvonne, don't tell me you forgot my birthday tomorrow! I've been looking forward to your gift!"
"There's no way I'd forget. Your gift is ready, and I'll bring it tomorrow."
Besides the gift, she also planned to tell Nancy that she was leaving.
In past years, she always got to the party early, hoping to spend more time with Colin.
This time, she didn't go until the party was already halfway through.
Like always, the birthday celebration was held at the Sullivan's residence.
Yvonne had been there so many times that she knew the place well and entered through the back entrance.
Inside the hall, the candles were just being blown out. Surrounded by guests, Nancy stood in the center, beaming with joy.
Her parents stood smiling beside her on one side, while Colin and Sienna were on the other, looking cheerful.
They appeared like a happy family.
Yvonne stayed in the background and overheard some maids whispering.
"I thought Mr. Sullivan and Ms. Jefferson were over for good. I didn't think they'd ever get back together, but now it looks like they did. He's so devoted to her."
"Exactly. Ms. Sullivan's best friend chased after him for years, but he never showed any interest. It's obvious his heart has always been with Ms. Jefferson."
"Sir Sullivan and Madam Sullivan have been hoping he'd settle down for a long time. He always said no until now. Bringing Ms. Jefferson home feels like he's finally made his choice. Maybe a wedding is coming soon."
Chapter 8
Yvonne had already let go of her feelings for Colin and moved on from their past.
His love life, whoever he dated or married, no longer had anything to do with her.
So, when she heard those comments again, she felt nothing at all.
She quietly mouthed the birthday song. When she looked up, her eyes met Colin's.
He frowned, turned to Nancy, and said something. She glanced over and came through the crowd.
Yvonne hugged Nancy gently, handed over the gift, and smiled. "Happy birthday."
Nancy had waited all night for Yvonne and invited her to eat cake, but Yvonne shook her head.
"There are too many people and it's noisy. You go enjoy yourself. I'll wait for you in your room. I need to talk to you later."
Worried Yvonne might feel uncomfortable seeing Colin, Nancy agreed right away.
Yvonne avoided the crowd and went up to Nancy's room on the third floor with ease.
She sat on the couch. After a while, she started to feel sleepy and closed her eyes to rest.
Half-asleep, she heard someone enter and thought it was Nancy. But when she opened her eyes, she saw Sienna.
Sienna's expression was cold, and her voice sharp.
"I thought you gave up. Why are you still showing up in front of Colin? He only cares about me. No matter what you do, you won't win. He'll never choose you!"
Yvonne hadn't expected Sienna to say that and froze for a moment before replying calmly, "I only came to drop off a gift for Nancy. I'll be gone soon."
Sienna looked even more alert and disgusted.
"You've been shamelessly clinging to Colin for years, all thanks to Nancy backing you up. He's so unfortunate to have a sister who can't tell right from wrong and keeps causing trouble."
Yvonne usually didn't let Sienna's nasty words bother her. But the moment Sienna dragged Nancy into it, her expression turned cold.
"Does Colin know you talk like this about his beloved sister behind his back?"
Sienna sneered. "Colin will always love me. Who cares if I insult his sister? You and Nancy are nothing but shameless. I'm just telling the truth. You're mad because I hit a nerve, aren't you?"
"You left Colin seven years ago and vanished overseas. He was shattered. Nancy, who truly loves her brother, never blamed you once. But now you're trying to go back to him while trash-talking her in secret. Who's the most shameless here?"
Sienna hadn't expected Yvonne to fight back with words. Furious, she slapped Yvonne.
Yvonne didn't back down and hit her right back.
Sienna held her stinging cheek, tears of rage in her eyes, then charged at Yvonne.
Yvonne grabbed Sienna's hair, and they struggled hard.
In the chaos, a scented candle on the table tipped over.
Flames spread to the bed sheets, then the carpet. The fire grew fast.
Thick smoke filled the room. Before they realized it, the place was ablaze.
Yvonne tried to get the door open, but Sienna shoved her toward the flames.
The heat scorched her skin, making her shiver from the pain.
Yvonne tried to smother the fire on herself when the bedroom door burst open.
Colin ran in. He was just a few steps away from her, but his eyes barely glanced at her.
He rushed past and went straight to Sienna, wrapping her in his arms.
Smoke surrounded everything. Yvonne could hardly breathe.
She reached out with her burned hands and grabbed Colin's leg.
He looked down for a second, then yanked his leg away and walked off without a word.
As his figure disappeared into the smoke, Yvonne blacked out.
Chapter 9
Yvonne never thought she'd survive.
When she opened her eyes, she saw Nancy beside her, eyes red from crying.
"Yvonne, thank goodness you're fine. I would've blamed myself forever. Does it hurt? Don't worry. I got the best doctor. You won't have any scars."
"It's just a small injury. I'm alright. Don't feel bad or stressed over it."
Yvonne's hands throbbed with searing pain, but she forced a smile and hugged Nancy.
"There's something I meant to tell you yesterday. It's probably a little late, but please don't be mad. I'm flying back to San Francisco this afternoon. My parents arranged a marriage for me, and they're pushing me to go through with it. I already bought the ticket. Will you come with me to the airport later?"
Nancy hadn't seen it coming, and her tears, which had only just stopped, came rushing back.
"What? You're leaving today? And getting married? You're not coming back, are you? What am I supposed to do without you?"
Yvonne sighed and gently comforted Nancy until she finally stopped crying.
They whispered heartfelt words to each other before Nancy went to handle the discharge paperwork.
Yvonne had just finished changing through the pain when Colin walked in with a dark expression.
"You hit Sienna and tried to burn her alive, didn't you?"
Seeing him again, Yvonne felt nothing. Her voice was flat.
"She said that, and you just took her word for it? Didn't even bother checking the facts?"
"I don't need proof! I'll trust whatever Sienna says, no matter what."
Colin didn't even let Yvonne explain and refused to hear her side.
The coldness in his eyes told her clearly that nothing she said would change his mind.
Realizing it was useless, she just smiled. "So, why are you here?"
"I came to make you apologize to Sienna!"
Ignoring her injuries, Colin grabbed her hurt hand and yanked her forward.
The pressure reopened her wound, and she cried out from the pain.
Still, she bit her lip and fought to break free, holding back her tears.
Just then, Nancy came back and stepped in between them, shielding Yvonne.
Colin stared at them coldly, his voice firm and sharp.
"Move aside. Yvonne must apologize to Sienna today!"
"I won't let that happen!" Nancy shouted; her voice was rough. "I believe Yvonne didn't do anything wrong! You always take Sienna's side, but there are security cameras in my room. Everything from yesterday is recorded. If you want her to say sorry, you'd better watch that footage first!"
She stood her ground without backing off.
Colin's face darkened with anger, veins bulging on his forehead. Just as he was about to snap back, a message from Sienna popped up on his phone.
He looked at it quickly, held back his rage, and turned to leave.
"Fine. I'll check the surveillance footage tonight. Once there's solid proof, I'll see what you have to say!"
He slammed the door on his way out, and the ward fell quiet once more.
As Nancy tended to Yvonne's injury, she apologized.
Yvonne softly shook her head, wiping away Nancy's tears.
"Nancy, there's no need to apologize. We didn't do anything wrong. I'll be leaving soon, so you must take care of yourself from now on."
Nancy nodded firmly, helping Yvonne gather her things and escorting her to the airport.
The boarding announcement for the flight to San Francisco came over the intercom. Yvonne gave Nancy a final hug before walking through the gate without hesitation.
Once on the plane, she deleted all of Colin's contact information.
Nancy's last message appeared.
"Yvonne, I hope you're happy every day when you get home. Don't worry. I'll find out the truth tonight and make sure you get justice."
Yvonne smiled as the screen went dark. Then, she turned her gaze to the clouds outside the plane window.
To her, the truth and justice didn't matter anymore.
Colin and all the hurt he caused had faded from her memory.
She was ready to leave it all behind for good.
