My fiance had been cheating on me with my best friend for five years.
The day before our engagement party, she was wearing my ring.
"You forgot? You fell down the stairs, hit your head, and lost your memory. I'm your best friend's boyfriend," he said.
But that was just a joke I'd made.
Winnie Carroll was my best friend.
And right now, she was in my boyfriend's arms.
For a moment, she looked surprised and then her face lit up with barely concealed joy.
"Yes! I'm your best friend, and this is my boyfriend!"
A jolt went through my body, and it felt like all the blood in my veins was rushing backward.
It was just a small joke, but somehow, I'd end up being the biggest fool here.
"You're not serious, right?" I forced the words out.
They had to be kidding me. Maybe they knew I hadn't lost my memory and were trying to mess with me.
"Why would we joke about this?"
Winnie wiggled the ring on her right hand.
"Look, Jesse and I were supposed to get engaged today. But we canceled the party because of your accident."
The diamond on her hand sparkled so brightly it almost hurt my eyes.
A 10-carat flawless radiant cut-Jesse Livingston had it custom-made for me months ago.
Now it was on my best friend's finger.
"You two...
"When did you get together?"
Winnie leaned into Jesse's chest.
"We've been together for five years!"
Jesse's expression shifted slightly. He glanced at me, his eyes flickering with unease.
When he saw I didn't react, he secretly sighed in relief.
Jesse and I had been together for five years, too.
So they'd been together all along.
My best friend and my boyfriend had been betraying me from the very beginning...
Jesse made a call. A few minutes later, a stunningly handsome man appeared in my hospital room.
It was Nathan Campbell-Jesse's best friend and the one who looked down on me the most.
Jesse and Nathan were from New York's most elite families, while I was just from a suburban of a small city.
All of Jesse's rich friends thought I was only with him for his money, and they never bothered to hide their contempt.
But Nathan had always been the harshest of them all.
He didn't even bother to attend our engagement party.
Now he stood in the door of my hospital room, his sharp gaze locked on me.
"This is your boyfriend.
"Nathan Campbell," Jesse said smoothly.
Just like that-Nathan suddenly became my boyfriend.
Jesse lied without even blinking, but I couldn't believe Nathan would go along with such a ridiculous act.
Nathan smirked. "Yeah, I'm your boyfriend."
I was too stunned to speak.
Jesse handed me off to Nathan and left with Winnie.
Nathan and I stared at each other in silence for a long time.
"Take me home."
Chapter 2
Nathan signed my discharge papers, and I followed him home, still in a daze.
He said we'd been together for years.
But the huge villa had no trace of me. I pretended not to notice and nodded, just like he did.
He found me a pair of women's slippers, which surprisingly fit perfectly.
Then he carried me up in his arms, set me gently on the couch, and kissed my forehead.
I tried to pull away, but he gently gripped my chin.
There was nowhere to run.
"Be good, Sienna Scott. I'll make you something to eat."
I almost forgot-I hadn't eaten in days.
Nathan didn't even have a housekeeper.
It was hard to believe a CEO like him cooked for himself when he got home.
I followed the sound to the kitchen.
He was calmly whisking the eggs.
Then I heard his voice-talking to Jesse on speaker.
"Just look after Sienna for now, will you?"
"You're not worried she'll leave you if she regains her memory?"
"Worried? Everyone in New York knows how much she loves me. Even if she caught me cheating in bed, she still wouldn't break up with me."
"Then why not just break up with her if you want to be with Winnie?"
"I do love Sienna, but she's boring in bed. Once I've had my fun, I'll come back for her."
Nathan didn't respond; his hand kept whisking.
"Nathan, you're my best friend. I know Sienna's not your type, but still, don't touch her. She's the woman I'm going to marry-"
Before Jesse could finish, Nathan hung up.
My knees almost gave out.
So Jesse-the man who once showered me with love and affection- had thought I was boring.
He'd grown bored of me long ago.
Nathan noticed me standing there.
He set everything down, quickly wiped his hands, and pulled me into his arms.
"What are you doing here?
"Bored already?"
I shook my head. "Just thought I'd see if you needed help."
Nathan gently ruffled my hair.
"My Sienna doesn't need to lift a finger in the kitchen.
"Leave everything to me."
Nathan lied to me again.
Every day with Jesse, I did all the housework.
He didn't like strangers in the house, so he never hired a maid.
As his girlfriend, I took on that role.
I had to wake up early to cook, do the laundry, and keep the massive villa clean.
My hands were rough, covered in calluses and fine lines.
I had already regarded him as my husband, so I did it all without complaint.
"Being with you means I don't have to do any housework?"
I leaned against Nathan's chest-his heartbeat strong and steady.
"Of course not. You're the woman I love most. I'd never let you do any of that."
Nathan's tenderness almost made me forget that it was all just a lie.
The food he cooked was delicious.
It was exactly how I liked it-sweet and spicy.
"Nathan, do you also like sweet and spicy food?"
"It's because you like it, so I made it for you."
I felt a little confused. "How did he know?
"Even Jesse wouldn't have known my taste," I wondered inwardly.
Jesse hated the sweet taste.
So I never added sugar when I cooked for him.
Unexpectedly, Nathan knew.
I didn't know if it was just a coincidence...
That night, I fell asleep in Nathan's bed.
In the middle of the night, I felt his arms wrap around me from behind.
His body was incredibly warm.
I felt oddly comforted by it.
I enjoyed the warmth, so I let Nathan hold me.
He softly sighed against my back.
"How did you get so thin?"
Chapter 3
I slept deeply and didn't wake up until nearly noon.
Nathan's phone kept ringing. Annoyed, he answered it, then pulled me back into his arms.
"Don't forget the party tonight," Jesse said over the phone.
Nathan lazily played with my hair, making me a little ticklish.
I let out a quiet tsk, not expecting the person on the other end of the call to hear it.
"What was that?
"You're with a woman?"
Nathan hung up right away.
He silenced his phone and tossed it aside, then pulled me completely into his arms.
The space between us suddenly felt too close, his body heat rising.
I tried to push him away, but he only held me tighter.
"What are you doing?!"
I was caught between shock and anger, but Nathan didn't budge.
"What do you think?
"We're just doing what couples normally do."
His lips moved in closer, my heart pounding as a wave of guilt crushed down on me.
I shoved him away, jumped out of bed, and ran into the bathroom.
Before I could close the door, I heard his low laughter.
I looked at myself in the mirror-my face was way too red.
It took me nearly half an hour in the bathroom just to calm my heartbeat.
Nathan said we used to kiss all the time, that we'd done all kinds of intimate things.
Another lie.
I was so angry, I almost laughed.
That evening, Nathan took me out to dinner. It wasn't until we arrived that I realized Jesse, Winnie, and the rest of New York's elite crowd were all there.
Winnie sat beside Jesse in a strapless white evening gown, wearing the Sea Star necklace Nathan had brought back for me from last week's auction.
I couldn't bear to wear it, so I placed it in the display case in my walk-in closet and I admired it through the glass every day.
Jesse once teased me, asking if I planned to never wear it.
Of course not.
I'd planned to wear it on my wedding day. But it seemed that day with Jesse may never come.
"Sienna!"
Winnie stood up, smiling brightly as she walked over and took my hand, just like she always used to.
"Today's kind of a makeup engagement party for me and Jesse," she said, her eyes locked on mine with a cheerful glint.
"I'm really glad you could come!"
Engagement party?
So today was Winnie and Jesse's engagement party.
Winnie's provocative smile almost made me slip up and revealed I hadn't lost my memory. Nathan pulled me into his arms, subtly pulling my hand away from Winnie's.
Jesse hadn't been paying attention to us until Nathan pulled me closer. His eyes narrowed slightly, and he said in a low voice, "What were you talking about?"
"Nothing."
Nathan guided me to the seat farthest from Jesse and Winnie.
Jesse and his buddies were toasting each other. The loud noise gave me a headache, while Nathan kept serving me food.
"Hey, Nathan!
"Why aren't you drinking today?"
Nathan didn't even look up. "I have to drive later."
"Let Sienna drive."
"It's too tiring. I wouldn't let her do that."
The room filled with laughter and teasing, but Jesse, sitting at the main seat, became tense.
"Nathan, you're so thoughtful."
Jesse smirked, and the mood in the room immediately turned cold.
Someone tried to lighten things up, suggesting that Jesse and Winnie kiss since it was their engagement party.
Winnie leaned in and kissed Jesse.
Jesse's face relaxed, and he deepened the kiss.
They kissed passionately.
I thought I was completely disappointed by Jesse, but seeing such a blatant scene still made me feel sick. Tears flowed uncontrollably.
I fled to the toilet.
Outside the door, one of Jesse's friends asked if cheating in front of his girlfriend was exciting.
Jesse laughed, carefree and cocky.
"Exciting? Of course.
"Anyway, Sienna's lost her memory. Even if she gets it back, she'll never leave me."
