Goodbye, My Snobbish Ex
Chapter 1
In December, the first snowfall visited Ottaster.
On her third wedding anniversary, Lillian Brook was trapped at the hospital by her mother-in-law Chloe Larsen until 11:30 PM before she was finally let go.
Snow was coming down hard on the streets. As Lillian didn't drive here, she called her husband Jeffrey Larsen, hoping he would come pick her up.
The phone rang a few times, and Jeffrey's cold and magnetic voice came through.
"What's up?"
Listening to him, Lillian felt all the frustration she'd built up dealing with Chloe flood her in waves. Her voice cracked as she asked, "Can you come pick me up? It's snowing heavily outside..."
"I'm busy," Jeffrey coldly cut her off. "If you're tired, just hail a cab. Don't bother me with such trifles."
Lillian's throat tightened as she tried to speak, but the call had already ended.
The dial tone hummed in her ear, leaving a raw ache in her chest.
They had been in love for seven years, married for three.
When they first started dating, Jeffrey would stand out in the snow for hours, waiting below the building where she worked part-time just to walk her home.
And he would embrace her, saying, "The road's slippery in the snow. I'm worried you might fall without my presence."
But now, her safety became a trifle to him.
The wind howled, and the snow picked up. Lillian huddled in her down jacket, waiting for a cab. Her fingers, numb from the cold, scrolled through her social media feed, looking for a distraction.
After liking a few posts, her thumb paused at a photo snapped by Jeffrey's assistant, Caleb Baker.
Jeffrey was in it, too, sitting at a desk in the Larsen Group's deputy GM office, reading through papers, with a pink milkshake sitting on the desk in front of him.
Jeffrey never drank milkshakes, so who could have put that there?
Lillian tried to open the full-size photo, but the post had already disappeared, like someone was scrambling to hide something.
The wind bit at her skin, and the cab driver honked impatiently. "You getting in or what?"
Snapping out of her daze, Lillian replied stiffly, "I'm coming."
By the time she got home, it was already dawn.
As soon as she stepped inside, she noticed that the gift bag in the living room corner was gone.
That was the popular starlight bracelet that Jeffrey had bought. She thought it was his gift for their third wedding anniversary...
Lillian froze in confusion when the door suddenly opened.
Jeffrey, holding the doorknob, seemed surprised to see her. "Why are you still up?"
"I just got back." Lillian pulled herself together and softly asked, still holding onto a sliver of hope, "Do you have anything to say to me?"
"What?" Jeffrey asked, not even glancing at her. Then he loosened his tie, heading for the bathroom. " If you're tired, just go to bed. Don't stay up."
Lillian stood frozen, trying to add something, but the bathroom door slammed shut, cutting her off.
He completely forgot their anniversary...
Lillian let out a soft sigh, feeling disheartened.
The next morning, Lillian went to her architectural design studio.
She had started it after graduation. Over the past two years, it had built quite a reputation in the industry.
As soon as she entered the office, her assistant, Stela Murray, strode over. "Lillian, the Larsen Group asked if we could send our design draft. We have to compete with another studio for the collaboration."
She slammed her fist on the table. "Who do they think they are? Our designs are pure gold! We gave them a good deal, and now they're making us fight for it? That's just insulting!"
Lillian was taken aback, too.
But seeing Stela's scowl, she forced a smile and reassured, "I'll go and deliver it. Relax, it's just this once."
Although she didn't know how such a change could happen, she had absolute confidence in her ability to win against the opponent.
In the afternoon, Lillian arrived at the Larsen Group.
As she stepped into the lobby, she spotted Caleb.
Assuming he was waiting for her, she was about to walk over, but a pink Porsche pulled up right in front of her.
She stopped in her tracks, watching as Caleb opened the car door and helped a young girl out.
She couldn't help but ask, "Who is she?"
Caleb seemed flustered at the sight of her. After calming down, he introduced, "Lillian, you came just in time. This is Ashley Stone, the daughter of the chairman of the Stone Group, and the representative for Irides Studio."
Irides Studio was their competitor this time.
Lillian looked at Ashley, who looked young and exuberant like a fresh graduate with her big, round eyes.
As their eyes met, Ashley flashed a sweet smile and extended her hand. "Ms. Brook, hello. You can call me Ashley."
Lillian raised a brow as she recalled Ashley's identity.
She politely reached out to shake hands, but her eyes widened at the sight of Ashley's wrist.
There, peeking from under Ashley's sleeve, was that familiar starlight bracelet.
Chapter 2
Lillian's breath suddenly paused.
Ashley followed her gaze and smiled. "This is a gift from my boyfriend, a second-anniversary present."
She had a boyfriend.
Lillian's tense shoulders relaxed. A quiet laugh escaped her lips. She'd been overthinking again.
Jeffrey wasn't the only person in the world who bought that style of bracelet.
She let out a breath and took Ashley's hand. "Your boyfriend has a good memory." But she secretly thought to herself, "Jeffrey used to remember every special occasion too, with roses and necklaces. Over time, the magic just ... faded."
Ashley blinked her eyes and said, "You know, men only remember things they care about."
Lillian was slightly startled, and when she came back to her senses, Ashley had already let go of her hand and turned away.
Lillian frowned and followed her into the building.
As soon as they entered, Ashley was taken away by a manager.
Outside the office, only she and Caleb were left. Caleb shouted, "Lillian."
He lowered his head and hesitated for a while, then stammered, "Last night, a colleague bought us milkshakes."
Lillian stopped mid-step. Seeing through Caleb's clumsy cover-up act, she silently walked past him into Jeffrey's office.
Jeffrey was holding a design draft and looking at it attentively.
Lillian keenly saw the logo of Irides Studio on top.
This design was not outstanding and quite immature.
It was hard to imagine how such a design draft could have been delivered to Jeffrey. It should have been rejected during the initial review by the Larsen Group project team...
Jeffrey saw her coming in and put down the manuscript in his hands. "What brings you here?"
"The design drawings."
Lillian averted her gaze and placed the file bag containing the design drawings on Jeffrey's desk.
Jeffrey opened it and glanced at it. "Caleb can do it."
His tone was textbook formal, every word surgically precise.
Lillian was at a loss for words for a moment.
She pursed her lips, and out of the corner of her eye, she suddenly saw a sticker stuck on the corner of Jeffrey's desk.
It was a lovely cartoon cat, very small, but the color stood out in Jeffrey's neat office.
Her heart skipped a beat and she immediately asked, "What is this?"
Jeffrey glanced at her and said, "Nothing."
His voice was lazy and flat, like he couldn't even pretend to care.
Lillian's heart trembled. "How come I don't remember you liking this?"
Jeffrey finally lifted his eyes from the manuscript and looked at Lillian, his gaze turning cold. "In the office, we are just business partners."
Lillian's face instantly turned pale, and she was about to say something, but the door was pushed open.
"Mr. Larsen, I made the changes to the unsatisfactory parts you mentioned last time..."
The one who came in was unexpectedly Ashley. When she saw Lillian, she appeared very surprised and quietly asked Jeffrey, "Do I come at the wrong time?"
Jeffrey glanced at Ashley and said, "You go out first."
The cold voice was lowered and surprisingly had a hint of gentleness.
Lillian's heart skipped a beat, and then she saw Ashley blink her eyes and say, "Okay, then I'll treat you to a milkshake."
She set a milkshake on the desk without another word. It was pink and achingly familiar.
Lillian felt a chill creeping up her spine inch by inch, and she stiffly said, "You never used to drink milkshakes before."
Jeffrey paused for a moment and said, "Tried it. Not bad." His voice went cold. "You can leave now."
Lillian stared at the man she thought she knew. Her entire body turned to stone, every vein pumping not blood but jagged ice that cut from the inside out.
As she walked to the elevator after leaving the office, Caleb caught up and asked, "Lillian, are you okay?"
Lillian stared at him blankly, and her intuition told her that there was something unclear between Jeffrey and Ashley.
Caleb had been working for Jeffrey for seven years, so there were certain things he knew very clearly. As long as she pressed him, she would be able to get an answer.
But she opened her lips, only to hoarsely say, "I'm fine... Thank you!"
There was only Lillian in the elevator.
She watched the elevator numbers blink downward, each red digit stealing a piece of her heart until it hung weightless in her chest and then plummeted.
Her eyes turned red unconsciously.
In the past two years, she had doubted whether Jeffrey had kept a mistress as he worked overtime more than usual, coming back in the middle of the night with a faint scent of perfume on his body...
She used to think that she was just being suspicious, but it turned out that those suspicions were not unfounded.
The next day, Lillian arrived at the office early in the morning.
As soon as she entered, Stela rushed anxiously towards her.
"Lillian, our design draft was returned by the Larsen Group this morning!
"They said we plagiarized!"
Chapter 3
Plagiarism?
Lillian's heart froze as she looked at the comparative chart sent by the Larsen Group, but she couldn't help but find it ridiculous.
The designs shared nothing but basic structures. If that was considered plagiarism, then every architect in the business was guilty of copying.
She immediately called Jeffrey and said straightforwardly, "I did not plagiarize."
Jeffrey remained noncommittal, speaking in a flat tone. "The project team has already decided to use Ashley's design."
In an instant, all of Lillian's explanations were stuck in her throat.
Did the project team choose her, or did he choose her?
The words burned on Lillian's tongue.
Her eyes fell on the crystal ruler Jeffrey had gifted her. She blinked hard before whispering, "Do you still trust me at all?"
"You've earned enough in these years."
His tone was flat and devoid of any extra emotions.
Lillian was stunned for a moment before she finally understood the implied meaning behind Jeffrey's words.
When Jeffrey was building his career, he worked closely with her studio, charging below-market rates for all projects.
But in his eyes, those discounts were just advantages she took from him. It felt like a knife to the chest, and even the blood ran cold.
***
The cooperation with the Larsen Group came to an end, but Stela was overjoyed and couldn't stop giggling.
In the evening, Lillian received a call from the hospital, saying that Chloe would be discharged today.
She went downstairs and was surprised to see Jeffrey's car parked downstairs.
"Get in the car."
Lillian looked at his indifferent face, with mixed feelings.
The car headed straight to the hospital. Lillian went upstairs to help Chloe organize her belongings.
As she turned to leave, she froze. The hospital room's trash can held an unopened specialty package from her grandmother Aimee Campbell in Starham.
Her chest tightened for a moment. She carefully retrieved it and slipped it into her bag.
Chloe was faster than her, she got in the car and sat in the passenger seat, and even took a sideways glance at Lillian sitting in the back seat.
She complained to Jeffrey in Ottaster dialect, "Your grandpa always favored your eldest brother. Now that he's engaged to an heiress. No wonder he's the CEO while you're just a deputy director. You see how it works?
"I don't know why you were making a fuss about marrying this housewife. She's completely useless."
Jeffrey was an illegitimate child.
When his father died, the Larsen Group's chairman threw both grandsons into the business, fueling their fight for control of the company.
Chloe never liked Lillian, convinced she couldn't boost Jeffrey's career. These bitter words had spilled from her lips a hundred times over.
Lillian sat in the back seat, looking at the silent Jeffrey in the rearview mirror, her heart sinking little by little.
In the past, when Chloe scolded her, he would still argue with her. Over time, it seemed that he also got used to listening.
Gradually, his silence became the norm in Chloe's eyes. As her words became more and more harsh, he never once stopped it.
And now, she hardly knew whether, in Jeffrey's silence, there was more helplessness or more agreement.
After Jeffrey sent Chloe back to her villa, he turned around and went back.
Lillian leaned her head against the car window, watching the dancing snowflakes outside, and suddenly asked, "Do you regret marrying me?"
Jeffrey did not answer.
The silence hung heavy. Lillian felt the chill first in her bones creeping into places no warmth could reach, even with the heater on full blast.
She shrank her body and after a while, she finally heard Jeffrey say, "We've married. Questions like that are meaningless."
Lillian suddenly welled up with tears and said in a hoarse voice, "Stop the car."
Jeffrey parked the car by the roadside. She immediately got out of the car, and the cold wind, carrying snowflakes, pattered on her face.
Jeffrey furrowed his brows and rolled down the car window. The handsome face was tainted with snow, and his gaze was even colder than the snow.
"What are you making a fuss about?"
Lillian shook her head, her throat choked up to the point where she could hardly utter a word.
Jeffrey furrowed his brows impatiently, glanced at her, and then lost his patience. He stepped on the accelerator and quickly left.
Lillian stood in the snow for ages, swallowing back the ache in her chest. When she finally looked up, a massive ad screen at the intersection flashed starlight bracelets. The tagline claimed each one had a unique code etched on it.
Lillian stared blankly at the words, then found herself walking into the jewelry store without quite knowing why.
She asked the shop assistant to check the code of the bracelet that Jeffrey had bought.
The code was 1314.
Lillian looked at the numbers, and her whole body seemed to freeze as if her blood had turned to ice.
The numbers on Ashley's bracelet were 1314!
Ashley's words kept echoing in her ears. "This is a gift for our second anniversary from my boyfriend."
Chapter 4
Lillian stood there stiffly for a long time before walking out in a daze.
The snow had stopped, but the wind was still howling.
When she walked home against the cold wind for nearly half an hour, Jeffrey had fallen asleep.
Moonlight scattered across his face, sharp and cold.
Lillian stood motionless by the bed, staring. Only then did she realize how much Jeffrey had changed over ten years. The boy in the school uniform had vanished completely.
Without warning, an icy void ripped open in her chest, the howling wind of it leaving her shivering uncontrollably. "Jeffrey..." His name trembled from her lips and then died in her throat.
If it were ten years ago, she would have pulled Jeffrey up and asked him if he still loved her.
But now she couldn't...
She was afraid that the answer to this question was negative.
She didn't sleep all night and went to the studio early the next day.
"Lillian, the Larsen Group..." As soon as Lillian entered the room, Stela was startled by her pale complexion. "Lillian, why do you look so unwell?"
Lillian shook her head. The messy emotional baggage was too tangled to explain, and she had no intention of letting anyone see her stumble over it.
She just asked, "What happened to the Larsen Group?"
Stela snapped back to reality and said, "The general manager of the Larsen Group is here to see you. He is currently in the meeting room."
General Manager?
Wasn't that Luke Larsen, the half-brother of Jeffrey?
Lillian walked into the reception room full of doubts and saw Luke leisurely looking at the trophy wall in the studio.
He was handsome, with Jeffrey's eyes, but carried a reckless charm in his features that seemed to attract all the wrong kinds of attention.
Lillian said directly, "What do you want with me, Mr. Larsen? The cooperation between the Larsen Group and Glory Studio has already ended."
She married Jeffrey three years ago, and only met Luke a few times.
Luke raised an eyebrow and said, "I came today only representing myself.
"Ms. Brook, I think you don't know this bidding is to compete for the Stone Group's new project. Both Jeffrey and I are responsible for separate project teams..."
Speaking of this, he looked straight at Lillian and said, "So, you should know how crucial the design drawings for this bidding are."
Lillian was taken aback. The Stone Group—a heavyweight in real estate—had landed an industry-shaking deal. Now Jeffrey and Luke's power war would rise or fall on this single move.
She fell silent for a moment and asked, "Since it's so important, why do you come to me?"
"I've seen your design draft. It's excellent and also aligns with the Stone Group's concept."
Luke deliberately paused, with a playful smile. "And I heard that there is something unclear between Jeffrey and Mr. Stone's daughter. How can this play be without a key role like you?"
He said it so casually like her whole relationship with Jeffrey was just some soap opera for his amusement.
Lillian's eyebrows twisted, indicating her refusal.
But Luke reached out his hand and shook it in front of her. "One million dollars."
All Lillian's anger stuck in her throat. She stared at his outstretched hand, the dismissal burning her tongue, but she finally said, "Deal."
Nobody said no to money. And deep down, she didn't want to give Jeffrey and Ashley the satisfaction either.
The news of the collaboration between Glory Studio and Luke spread astonishingly fast.
As soon as Lillian returned home, she saw Jeffrey sitting on the sofa with a gloomy expression, his eyes filled with coldness as he looked at her.
"When did you meet Luke?"
Lillian calmly closed the door, saying, "He came to see me this morning."
Jeffrey said firmly, "Terminate the cooperation."
Lillian asked, "Why?"
Jeffrey suddenly stood up, with a hint of anger in his cold eyes. "Don't you know how many girls he has outside?"
Lillian was stunned by his words and it took her a while to understand its meaning.
Just like a sharp knife piercing through her heart, she almost asked back, "Do you think he's as shameless as you?"
She didn't understand why Jeffrey, after being secret in love with Ashley for two years, could so confidently suspect her.
"You..."
Jeffrey's face changed instantly.
Lillian, however, burst into laughter.
"Milkshakes, starlight bracelets, stickers... How many more secrets do you and Ashley have that I don't know about? Do you think I love you so much that I dare not even fuss about your infidelity? Or do you think I have become so foolish that I can't even notice your obvious 'showing off'?"
As Jeffrey watched the twisted and desolate smile on Lillian's face, his heart skipped a beat, and he was about to grab her wrist.
"Be calm."
Lillian pushed him away.
Some people could pretend not to know the truth and keep up appearances, but Lillian could no longer play the fool.
"Do you remember what you promised me when we got married?"
Lillian asked, but she didn't need him to answer. "You promised me that if you no longer love me, you would still tell me honestly.
"It's just a divorce. Do you think I wouldn't agree?"
The word "divorce" made Jeffrey panic, and he forcefully held Lillian, embracing her in his arms. "I was wrong. Please don't be angry..."
Lillian's eyelashes trembled, and scalding tears suddenly streamed down.
***
In the night, Jeffrey tightly embraced Lillian and said, "I'll break up with her."
His embrace was warm, a warmth that Lillian had never felt in the past few years.
But she only felt a coldness in her heart, wearily closing her eyes and not wanting to say anything.
In the following days, Jeffrey seemed to have truly broken up with Ashley. He no longer worked overtime frequently like before. He would return home early.
And on the seventh day, Ashley came to Glory Studio.
Her eyes were bloodshot, and the first words that came out of her mouth were, "Please, I beg you, give Jeffrey to me."
Chapter 5
Reception room.
Lillian locked the door and poured a glass of water for Ashley.
Ashley could only cry and say, "He hasn't come to see me for a week. I guess you said something."
Lillian remained silent.
She was his legal wife, while Ashley was just his mistress. Three years ago, when they got married, she never imagined that a mistress would boldly approach her.
"Ms. Brook, how much do you know about me and him?"
Lillian did not answer, so Ashley took out her phone from her bag and opened the photo album, placing it in front of Lillian.
Lillian froze in place. The album was filled to the brim with photos of Jeffrey and Ashley together, including beach vacations, desert hikes, forest adventures, and ocean views.
"We spent 739 days together, took 370 photos, and visited 21 cities. He said 'I love you' 78 times."
Ashley flipped through the pages and showed them to Lillian.
Lillian looked at Jeffrey in the photo, and her eyes slowly became moist.
Lillian knew that look all too well, the same soft gaze Jeffrey had when he first chased her at seventeen.
Ashley looked at her expression and suddenly smiled. She expanded a photo to full screen.
Lillian's mind buzzed, and in an instant, it went blank.
That was a photo of Ashley and Jeffrey in bed.
"This was our first time two years ago," Ashley continued, tapping the screen where Jeffrey held her in bed. "He whispered he'd cherish me forever."
She continued, "Jeffrey is quite romantic. He held me tight on mountain cable cars and waited with me for sunsets over desert dunes. Every lake, every glacier we visit... He always said those three words."
She paused, smirking at Lillian. "Part of me hates you for stealing his heart. But mostly I pity you. Three years of your marriage, when was the last time he said 'I love you'?"
This sentence tore at Lillian's heart like a blunt knife, causing her so much pain that she could hardly stand up straight. She suddenly got up and opened the door, and in a hoarse voice, she said, "Get out!"
Ashley got up and smiled.
"You can continue to keep Jeffrey by your side, but I won't lose."
With that, she arrogantly left, strutting away in high heels.
Lillian gritted her teeth, leaning against the door to support herself.
After a while, she saw Stela who looked shocked, and Luke who looked not surprised at all outside the door.
Stela said incoherently, "That's Irides Studio's representative..."
"I came to see you to revise the first draft."
Luke interrupted her timely, "Let's talk inside."
As soon as the door of the reception room closed, all the doubtful and sympathetic gazes were kept outside.
Lillian sat weakly on the sofa, covering her eyes, and said, "Thank you."
She didn't want to bring the family matters to work.
She didn't want to lose face, but now she was a joke.
"I hope your current condition does not affect the upcoming work."
Luke spread out the blueprint on the table and pointed at several red circles on it. "These all need improvement. Ashley is Mr. Stone's daughter, so the design draft needs to at least surpass her to have a chance of winning."
Lillian took a deep breath and said, "Okay."
Luke nodded and looked at Lillian's flushed face, then asked softly, "Are you sick?"
Lillian touched her face and found it a little hot. "Nothing, just a slight fever."
Luke looked at her quietly and after a while, he said, "Take care of yourself."
***
Lillian worked overtime until 11 o'clock before completing a satisfactory draft.
She had intended to go straight home, but as soon as she stood up, she felt a bit dizzy. She managed to make her way downstairs, and a snowflake landed on her face. Suddenly, Lillian became fully awake and realized that it was snowing outside.
As the snow was flying, she looked up and felt as if she had returned to her freshman year.
That time, Jeffrey skipped class and took her to the hospital when she had a fever.
She still remembered that day when the snow fell heavier than today, Jeffrey's hair frosted white.
With just a slight turn of her head, she could see his glistening eyes whispering not to be afraid.
How did Jeffrey change so quickly? Before she could even blink, he'd become this stranger...
Sick people were always more fragile than usual.
Lillian's mind was spinning. Before she could think clearly, her fingers had already tapped Jeffrey's contact.
After two rings, the line went live. No one spoke, just the crisp sound of someone breathing.
Lillian said hoarsely, "Jeffrey, I think I have a fever."
"Oh, I see. But he is not available now."
Ashley's sweet voice came through. "Do you want me to call an ambulance for you?"
Chapter 6
Like a bolt from the blue, Lillian's mind went blank in an instant.
With a sneer, Ashley hung up the phone, leaving her standing there in a daze.
After a while, she finally came to her senses and called back, but there was no answer.
Lillian stood in the snow, making phone calls over and over again.
The biting wind stung her eyes red, yet the phone kept ringing unanswered.
Lillian felt like her heart was torn open, the cold wind like knives constantly digging into it.
Staring into the snowfall, her thoughts blurred. Memories flickered between the boy she once knew and the man from yesterday.
But what burned brightest were those photos of Jeffrey and Ashley, their happiness searing her vision.
He deceived her again...
Lillian stiffly lifted her leg and then abruptly fell in the snow.
Waking up again, she was already in the hospital.
The nurse swapped her IV bag. "You had a fever of 39°C yesterday. Your assistant brought you in. You're free to go after this last drip."
Lillian closed her eyes and said, "Thank you."
She took her phone from the bedside table and found a total of thirty-eight missed calls. However, Jeffrey only replied, "On a business trip."
Lillian stiffened. There in her social feed glowed Ashley's post, her name tagged.
Ashley snapped a photo of Jeffrey's back as he tied an apron in the kitchen. The caption flaunted: "740 days together, and he finally cooked me his first meal."
Lillian's face instantly lost its color.
She remembered the first time Jeffrey cooked for her... She asked him if he was so skilled because he had cooked for someone else before.
Jeffrey said he only cooked for his wife.
***
Tears fell on the screen, splashing.
Lillian looked at the post for a long time and then made a phone call to Jeffrey.
The call was quickly connected, and Jeffrey's voice sounded as usual. "What's wrong?"
Lillian choked back tears and said, "Jeffrey, I miss Grandma and Grandpa."
Jeffrey remained silent for a moment and said, "I'll go back with you in a few days. I've been on a business trip these past few days."
What a liar!
Lillian hung up the phone and let tears streaming down her face.
The nurse changing her IV bag paused. "You're pale. Any other symptoms?"
Lillian just shook her head.
As soon as the nurse left, she pulled the needle and prepared to go home.
Walking out of the emergency room, she suddenly froze in the corner.
She saw Ashley holding hands with Jeffrey in the corridor, and the department they were in was the Obstetrics and Gynecology department.
Lillian could hardly believe her eyes.
The next second, Jeffrey and Ashley also saw her.
Lillian couldn't see Jeffrey's expression from a distance.
She could only see the proud smile on Ashley's face.
Ashley provocatively touched her stomach, and her words "I won't lose" suddenly appeared in Lillian's mind.
Lillian took a step towards Jeffrey with a dazed expression.
But suddenly, Jeffrey turned around and took Ashley into the office.
Lillian stood frozen in place, her whole body cold.
Sure enough... She lost, and she lost miserably.
Back home, Lillian sat motionless on the couch, her eyes vacant, until the click of a key in the door snapped through the silence.
Jeffrey sat beside Lillian and remained silent.
In the suffocating silence, Lillian said in a hoarse voice, "We have been together for ten years."
They'd survived the three-year rough patch and weathered the seven-year itch, only to trip over what should've been their decade milestone.
Jeffrey remained silent.
"I thought we would be together for longer..." Lillian choked for a moment, unable to continue speaking.
The marriage vows were clearly "till death do us part".
She asked a meaningless question, "Why? What makes her better than me?"
To her surprise, Jeffrey answered, "Her last name is Stone."
Lillian's mind went blank with a sudden ringing.
She stared blankly, and Jeffrey's face remained calm. "That's all."
Lillian suddenly burst into laughter.
She remembered Chloe's words and felt as if her heart had been stabbed by a knife, causing her to gasp for breath in pain.
After a long time, she finally said, "Jeffrey, I told you I don't play desperate games."
Jeffrey looked at her, and she was also looking at him. "I wish you a bright future.
"Let's divorce."
Jeffrey, however, said, "Okay, but you must leave with nothing."
